Is N53 better than N52?
This 3. L (183 cu in) version of the N53 produces 160 kW (215 bhp), the same figure as the 2. L (153 cu in) version of its N52 predecessor. Are N52 and N53 faulty engines?
N52 is more reliable, no defective injectors, no defective HP pump, no nox sensor and cat, the n53 block gets hairline cracks and cooling water loss due to bad burns due to the defective injectors. So, this is an interesting thought – because essentially, the N53 is a non-turbo N54 with higher compression. The DME is identical to the N54 (MSD80) and is simply calibrated to run without boost.
What’s better, N52 or N53?
N53 is an improvement of the N52 Naturally Aspirated (NA) engine mainly since it has gasoline direct injection technology and can burn stratified. N53 unlike its predecessor does not have Valvetronic due to space limitations in the cylinder head. The M47 is an older-generation engine, simpler and more reliable, with a front-mounted timing chain. It is a great choice for those who value reliability and want to avoid costly repairs. The N47 is more dynamic, more fuel-efficient, and more modern, but unfortunately less reliable due to its rear-mounted timing chain.The N47 had the timing chain placed at the rear of the engine as BMW felt that access to it would not be needed for the life of the vehicle. BMW usually consider lifetime to mean 100,000 miles. Replacement of the timing chain on the 1 series, 3 series and 5 series engines normally require removal of the engine.
