The N55 was used in the F87 M2 from 2016-2018. The B58 wasn’t available when the M2 development initially started back in ~2013-2014. The B58 was introduced in MY 2016 in the F30 340i. The S55 was used in the F87 M2 Competition from 2018-2021. The S58 engine, which was released in early 2019, is the high-performance version of the B58. It was named to Ward’s World’s 10 Best Engines in 2023 (installed in the M2).

Reliability of the N55 Engine The N55 engine is generally considered to be a reliable engine that can last for many miles if properly maintained. In many cases, we would say it’s more reliable than the N54. As you can see, now the B58 is really getting somewhere. It is making significantly more power than the S55 right up to 5800RPM, and over 100HP extra at 2500RPM.
